10 Things You Didn’t Know About Marshmallow Peeps

1.  IT USED TO TAKE 27 HOURS TO MAKE A PEEP – Back in 1953, when Sam Born acquired Rodda Candy Company and its line of marshmallow chicks, each chick was handmade with a pastry tube. The Born Family figured out a way to automate the process and by 1954, shortened the process to just 6 minutes. Today about 5.5 million peeps in all shapes and colors are born each day.

2.  THE ORIGINAL PEEP HAD TWO SMALL WINGS COMING OFF THE BIRD – The streamlined manufacturing process did away with the wings as they were too difficult to make with the automation process.

3.  THE RECIPE HAS PRETTY MUCH STAYED THE SAME – A boiling batch of granulated sugar mixed with liquid sugar, corn syrup, gelatin and vanilla extract.

4.  THE EYES ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE – In 1999 scientists at Emory University decided to test the theory that Peeps were indestructible. Scientists tested microwaves, water, boiling water, acetone and sulfuric acid – the Peeps survived them all. When scientists upped the ante with some Phenol, only the eyes remained.

5.  THERE ARE SUGAR FREE PEEPS – and chocolate covered Peeps too.

6.  PEEP STORES ACTUALLY EXIST – The first Peeps store opened in Oxon Hill, MD right outside of DC and since then two more stores have opened selling Peeps of all shapes and colors as well as Peeps-brand merchandise and other candies like Mike & Ike’s and Hot Tamales.

7.  FACEBOOK GROUPS ARE DEDICATED TO DISLIKING PEEPS – Peeps can be polarizing: people either loved them or hate them when it comes to consumption. An estimated 1/3 of all Peeps purchased are not eaten but rather used for decoration

8.  THEY REALLY ARE EVERYONE’S FAVORITE NON-CHOCOLATE EASTER CANDY – For the past 20 years, no other non-chocolate Easter candy has been able to compete with Peeps. For the past two decades, over 1.5 Billion Peeps are purchased each Spring.

9.  PEEPS LIP BALM IS A THING – yep.

10. THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 2 BILLION PEEPS SOLD IN 2014 – nearly 57 times more Peeps than Apple iPhones in that year.
